Homemade iontophoresis machine for Palmar hyperhidrosis
Palmar hyperhidrosis is a condition that has a big impact on people's lives because they have sweaty palms.
If antiperspirants have not been effective you can try iontophoresis which involves buying a machine that costs from $400 to $2500 in which you immerse your hands.
Alternatively you can make your own device to perform iontophoresis at home. It will cost you less than $100 with a simple power supply. If you have a need for a sophisticated power supply this can be about $250 but you have a laboratory standard device for experiments.
The device utilises pans of water to conduct a very small electrical current through the skin's surface.
Power supply. Jaycar sells this power supply for $175 but you can buy a simple one for $37.
Trays – Two plastic 2L storage containers
Electrodes. Buy a sheet of aluminium from Bunnings and a pair of cutters to make two electrodes. Attach wire by soldering or use a small bolt and nuts. The sheet will cost about $20. Cutters are $15.
Mat to separate hands from electrodes. Big W has two of these for $3 and you cut them to size.
The water conducts a current of about 6mA.
Weekly sessions lasting 20 minutes may provide relief from excess wetness.
